Dreamer: A Fusion of East and West in Residential Design

Chang Pai-Mo's Award-Winning Design Marries Feng-Shui and Western Art Techniques

The design of Dreamer was inspired by the client's desire for a home that transcends conventional styles. The client's belief in the philosophy of Feng-Shui and a love for diversity in design led to the creation of a hallway that is a visual representation of the big belly of Maitreya Buddha. The golden, arc-shaped wall, assembled from cut boards, adds a sense of harmony and movement to the space. This passage also adopts the image of a time tunnel, adding an interesting dimension to the design.

The realization of Dreamer was a challenging yet rewarding process. The client's bold style preferences and the designer's unique sophistication resulted in a residence that is unlike any other. The kitchen, for example, showcases a delicate layout with marbled flooring, white walls, and mirror reflections of metal kitchenware. The bar and stove areas are separated to cater to different culinary habits, and the surfaces are designed for easy cleaning and maintenance.

The design also features a special parking space for the owner's high-end cars, reflecting the owner's passion for speed and luxury. The use of yellow, orange, and black colors in this space creates a sensation of speed and tension, reminiscent of a racing field. The ground is layered with bricks with a wooden pattern, enhancing the luxurious feel of a high-end car showroom.

One of the key challenges in the design process was the use of segmented flooring, a feature rarely seen in residential spaces. This geometric segment connects the hall upstairs with the parking lot downstairs, enhancing the visual impact of the space. The design also features a Diamond Mountain, which reinterprets traditional viewpoints and showcases the simplistic and experienced design sense of the West.

Dreamer is a testament to the limitless possibilities of design when imagination meets expertise. The project, which started in November 2017 in Taipei City and was completed in June 2018, was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
